Freedom to Feel: Journaling & Yin Yoga for Emotional Release

As fireworks light up the sky this Fourth of July, many of us will be celebrating independence with BBQs and pool parties and trips down the shore. But there’s another kind of freedom that deserves a moment of its own — the quiet, radical freedom to feel.

Not fix. Not explain. Not power through.
Just… feel.

Feel Your Feels — No Need to Explain Them

Recently, my therapist called me out (lovingly, of course) for “intellectualizing” my emotions. And listen — can you blame me?! Feelings are confusing. I’d much rather break them down into neat little categories, diagram the emotional triggers, maybe even color-code them.

If you’re not familiar with the term, intellectualization is when you analyze or explain your emotions instead of actually experiencing them. It’s a defense mechanism — a way our brains protect us from getting too overwhelmed. So instead of saying “I feel sad,” we say things like “It makes sense I’m feeling this way because of XYZ.” Smart? Sure. But healing? Not quite.

Because it turns out, understanding a feeling isn’t the same as feeling it. And eventually, all those neatly categorized emotions want their moment to be felt.

Emotions Want to Move

During my recent sound healing training, I was reminded that emotions are energy — and they’re meant to move through us. When we suppress or overanalyze them, they get stuck. But when we create space for them to simply exist, something begins to shift.

You don’t have to perform, perfect, or explain your way into healing.
There is so much liberation in letting yourself be a full, messy, feeling human.

The Power of Allowing

What if this Fourth of July, you gave yourself the freedom to welcome all of you — the joy, the grief, the excitement, the fear?

✨ What if you didn’t have to label your emotions as good or bad?
✨ What if you didn’t have to justify or explain them?
✨ What if simply feeling was enough?

Your heart deserves that softness. That freedom.

🖊️ Journal Prompts for Emotional Freedom

Set aside a few quiet minutes this week to reflect. Let your pen move without judgment or overthinking:

  • What feelings have I been pushing away or over-explaining?
  • If my heart could speak, what would it say today?
  • Where in my life can I let myself feel more freely?

Write like no one’s watching — because no one is (except maybe your inner child, who is SO proud of you).

🧘‍♀️ Yin Yoga to Support Emotional Release

After journaling, try a gentle yin sequence to support emotional flow and nervous system grounding.

Hold each pose for 3–5 minutes, breathing slowly, intentionally:

  • Supported Butterfly — gently opens hips, soften your heart
  • Pigeon Pose — grounding and powerful; we tend to store emotional tension in the hips, so this pose can help you release what no longer serves you
  • Reclined Twist — wring out old energy, create space to feel
  • Legs Up the Wall — calm your mind, reset your body
  • Savasana — one hand on heart, one on belly, letting it all be

As you rest, imagine your breath like waves — gently washing through, taking with it whatever you’re ready to release. If you’re familiar with Ujayii breath, feel free to explore that here.

💖 A Softer Kind of Freedom

This weekend, in between cookouts and sparklers, give yourself the gift of feeling. Welcome what’s true for you, even if it’s messy, even if you’d rather explain it away.

There is no prize for emotional perfection.
There is only the quiet, powerful freedom of living unapologetically in your own body and heart.

You don’t need to earn your rest.
You don’t need to fix your feelings.
You are free — to feel, to be, and to begin again.

❤️🤍💙
