As the longest day of the year approaches on June 21, the Summer Solstice invites us into a season of light, energy, expansion, and movement.
There’s an undeniable, beautiful vibrancy to summer. With later sunsets, warmer days, beach trips, travel plans, social gatherings, and the feeling that life is finally in full bloom, this season can feel exciting and energizing. But sometimes it can also become overstimulating for the nervous system if we’re constantly moving, consuming, socializing, and pushing ourselves without pause, or without taking a moment to cool down.
In both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), summer is associated with heat, fire energy, activity, and outward expression. These systems remind us that true wellness comes from living in harmony with the season and finding balance within ourselves.
This Summer Solstice, let your rituals support your nervous system:
🌿 1. Cool the Fire
In Ayurveda, summer is associated with Pitta dosha, which carries the qualities of heat, intensity, sharpness, and fire.
When Pitta becomes excessive, we may notice:
- irritability
- burnout
- overstimulation
- inflammation
- impatience
- emotional overwhelm
Summer often encourages us to go-go-go, but nervous system healing sometimes asks us to soften instead.
Try balancing the fire of summer with:
- gentle or restorative yoga
- evening/sunset walks
- cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, mint, and coconut water
- slowing down during the hottest parts of the day
- reducing overstimulation and screen time
Cooling the body can help calm the mind, too.
🌊 2. Regulate Through Water & Flow
Water has an incredible ability to soothe the nervous system.
Whether it’s swimming in the ocean, floating in a pool, taking a bath, sitting near a lake, or simply staying hydrated, water reminds us to soften, flow, and release rigidity.
In TCM, balance comes when we move with nature rather than against it. Summer doesn’t have to be about forcing productivity or overfilling your calendar—it can also be about allowing yourself to move intuitively and experience more presence and ease.
Nature regulates the nervous system when we allow ourselves to fully experience it.
Take off your shoes.
Listen to the waves.
Watch the sunset.
Let yourself be here.
☀️ 3. Balance Expansion With Rest
Summer energy naturally pulls us outward—more plans, more movement, more stimulation, more “yes.”
But even joy can become overwhelming when we don’t create space to rest and reset.
This is your reminder that:
- rest is productive
- slowing down is okay
- you do not have to earn stillness
Yin yoga, meditation, sound healing, naps, reading outside, slow mornings, and intentional alone time are all forms of nervous system support.
❤️ 4. Support the Heart
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is connected to the Heart meridian and the element of Fire, which governs joy, connection, emotional expression, and vitality.
When balanced, this energy can help us feel:
- joyful
- connected
- inspired
- open-hearted
When imbalanced, it may show up as:
- anxiety
- restlessness
- insomnia
- overstimulation
- emotional exhaustion
Supporting the heart this season can look like:
- meaningful connection
- laughter
- breathwork
- heart-opening movement
- emotional honesty
- protecting your peace
Joy is healing too! Allow yourself to experience moments that make you feel alive, grounded, and connected to yourself, your loved ones, your community, whoever feels like sunshine in your life.
🌬️ 5. Breathe Before You React
One of the simplest ways to support the nervous system is through the breath.
When we’re overwhelmed, stressed, or overstimulated, our breath often becomes shallow and quick. Slowing the breath down helps signal safety to the body and creates space between stimulus and response.
Try this simple regulating breath practice:
Inhale for 4
Hold for 2
Exhale for 6
Repeat for a few rounds.
Longer exhales activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the part of the body responsible for rest, digestion, and relaxation.
Before reacting, rushing, spiraling, or overstimulating yourself further… pause and breathe first.
If you’re feeling hot — whether physically or mentally burnt out, you can also try one of these cooling breaths:
Sitali Pranayama (The Curled Tongue Breath)
How to do it:
Sit comfortably with your spine tall and shoulders relaxed.
Stick your tongue out and curl the sides upward to form a “U” or taco shape.
Inhale deeply through the center of your curled tongue, as if sipping through a straw.
Close your mouth and exhale slowly through your nostrils.
Repeat for a few rounds.
Sitkari Pranayama (The Hissing Breath)
If you cannot curl your tongue, this is the perfect alternative.
Close your lips and exhale slowly through your nose.
How to do it:
Sit comfortably and part your lips slightly while keeping your teeth lightly touching.
Float your tongue just behind your teeth.
Inhale deeply through the gaps in your teeth and over your tongue. This will create a natural “hissing” sound.
Repeat for a few rounds.
🌞 Closing Thoughts
This summer, allow yourself to light up with intention, rest without guilt, and create rituals that help you feel grounded, nourished, and regulated.
Healing doesn’t always have to feel heavy.
Sometimes it looks like sunshine on your skin, movement in your body, saltwater in your hair, laughter with people you love, and finally allowing yourself to exhale.
Join me this summer for beach yoga, sound healing, restorative movement, workshops, and more mindful moments designed to help you reconnect—with nature, your body, and yourself. 🌊🪷
