As August unfolds, there’s a noticeable shift in the air — the golden haze of late summer, the slight softening of the heat, the subtle tug that whispers, change is coming. While the calendar still says “summer,” energetically we start to feel the pivot. It’s a beautiful time to slow down just enough to reflect, reset, and realign with what matters most.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, late summer is considered its own unique season — a time of grounding and centering. It’s associated with the Earth element, which invites stability, nourishment, and reflection. It’s the season of digestion, not just of food, but of experiences, emotions, and everything you’ve taken in since the year began. Kind of wild to think how much we’ve already moved through in 2025, right?
August is a powerful moment to ask:
- What do I need to process before fall arrives?
- Where am I being invited to come back to center?
- What needs nourishment — physically, emotionally, spiritually?
Unlike the more fiery energy of early summer, August doesn’t ask us to rush. Instead, it offers an invitation to gently prepare — to gather what’s useful and release what’s no longer needed. Think of it like tidying your inner home before autumn rolls in.
This is also a gorgeous time to set intentions. Not in a high-pressure New Year’s kind of way, but more like planting seeds in warm soil. August intention-setting can be heart-led, intuitive, and deeply rooted in self-trust.
In your yoga practice, focus on grounding postures and mindful movement. Think:
- Malasana (Yogi Squat) – to open the hips and root into the Earth.
- Seated Forward Fold – to soothe the nervous system and encourage introspection.
- Reclined Butterfly Pose – to relax the belly and connect with your breath.
- Supine Twist – to gently wring out the spine and aid in emotional and energetic digestion.
- Revolved Lunge (Parivrtta Anjaneyasana) – to cultivate inner strength while supporting balance, detoxification, and the transition into what’s next.
Pair your movement with a gentle pranayama practice like Dirga (Three-Part Breath) or even Lion’s Breath to release stagnant energy and clear space for new intentions.
Here are a few ways I’m working with the energy of late summer right now:
- Returning to grounding practices. Morning walks barefoot in the grass, longer savasanas, gentle twists in my yoga practice.
- Simplifying routines. Paring back what feels like too much and making space for what actually supports my nervous system.
- Journaling check-ins. What’s been working? What hasn’t? Where do I want to direct my energy next?
- Eating with the season. Think: peaches, tomatoes, zucchini, corn — foods that are naturally abundant and full of sunshine.
If you’re feeling a little tired, a little emotionally tender, or a little unsure of what’s next — that’s okay. August holds that liminal energy between what was and what’s coming, and we’re not meant to have it all figured out yet. Instead, it’s about tuning in and trusting the wisdom already within.
Your August intention doesn’t need to be grand. It can be a whisper instead of a roar. Something like:
- I allow myself to soften and savor.
- I trust that rest is productive.
- I am grounded, nourished, and ready for what’s next.
As you move through the rest of this month, give yourself permission to move slowly, intentionally, and with heart. Align with the Earth energy. Come home to yourself.
